EHRAC Director Philip Leach, commenting on the attack on human rights defender Marina Dubrovina and journalist Elena Milashin in the hotel lobby in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, noted:

“We were shocked and saddened to receive terrible news about the brutal attack on Marina Dubrovina and Elena Milashina in Grozny. We have been working with Marina for many years. She works closely with our partners, the Memorial Human Rights Center. She has been fighting tirelessly for human rights in Russia and Ukraine.

The attack on Marina and Elena is an alarming reminder of the plight of human rights defenders in Chechnya. Chechen authorities have virtually declared the region a restricted area for activists.

An immediate and independent investigation is now required to establish the facts of everything that happened to Marina and Elena and to hold the attackers accountable. “

A group of more than 15 people, men and women, attacked Marina Dubrovina and Elena Milashina in the lobby of the Continent Hotel in Grozny . Subsequently, both human rights activists underwent a course of treatment and filed a statement on the fact of the attack to law enforcement agencies. Human rights activists and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) have called on authorities to investigate the attack.
